During the Civil War, regular and volunteer soldiers who served for more than one enlistment (usually 3 years) were authorized to wear a service chevron for each 3 year enlistment. Additionally, if they served in a conflict during one of those enlistments, they were allowed to wear a war-service marker under that enlistment (red under sky blue for infantry, sky blue under red for artillery, red under yellow for cavalry and engineers).
