Perhaps one of the more unique of Civil War rank insignias was that of the Principal Musician. Typically these were sergeant major chevrons, either silk or worsted, with an embroidered bullion star in the center. These chevrons were worn by the regimental principal musician who oversaw the field music of a regiment.
