Adopted in 1863, the 2nd National flag achieved almost instant popularity as a headquarters and garrison flag in the Confederate Army. These flags were also made in various sizes by the clothing and equipment depots to be issued to infantry regiments in the field. Many of these flags were also customized with unit designations and battle honors as the war went on.
