Unlike some other zouave units during the Civil War, the 5th New York was issued a wool flannel shirt rather than a vest to be worn under their jackets. This shirt is made from the same indigo blue wool flannel as the jacket, and has a long red wool flannel placket down the front which is backed with cotton drill. This shirt is machine sewn with handsewn buttonholes and buttons, and features jappaned tin buttons. (Brass 5 DZ is NOT included with shirt)
